The Attorney

Maiaklovsky, Esq.

Founder — Maiaklovsky Preval, Esq.  |  White Plains & New City, NY

I am a Canadian expat who has made New York home — and I bring a perspective to legal practice that is genuinely different. I grew up in Montreal, Quebec, and if you listen carefully, you might catch a faint French-Canadian lilt when I switch between English, French, and Haitian Creole with clients. That fluency is not a professional credential to me. It is simply how I grew up.

My academic path took me from Concordia University in Montreal, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1995, to the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, where I received my law degree in 1999. A few years later, I relocated to New York and completed a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at Pace University’s Elisabeth Haub School of Law in 2002.

I am the daughter of Haitian immigrants, and that upbringing shaped everything. My parents were relentless about four things: working hard, staying resilient, maintaining integrity, and never letting go of faith. Those were not motivational phrases on a wall — they were the operating system of our household. They became the operating system of this firm.

These are also the values I pass on to my own child — that the measure of a person is not what they achieve in comfort, but what they build through difficulty. I practice law the way I was raised: with full effort, honest counsel, and genuine care for the people in front of me.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

— Martin Luther King Jr.

When you work with me, you will get honesty — about your case, about your options, and about what is and is not realistic. I will not tell you what you want to hear. I will tell you what you need to know so you can make real decisions. And then I will fight for you with everything I have.

My practice spans immigration, family law, real estate, civil litigation, mediation, estate administration, not-for-profit law, personal injury, and entertainment and arts law — the last of which is personal to me as the daughter of Guerdy Jacques Préval, the internationally recognized Haitian-Canadian painter. I understand what it means to protect creative work because I grew up watching it being created.

I am also the daughter of a mother who worked hard in healthcare to provide for her family. Her dedication — showing up every day and giving everything she had for her children — shaped the way I approach this work. Every client deserves that same level of commitment.

I also serve clients virtually throughout New York State — including all five boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan — in addition to in-person appointments at our White Plains and New City offices. Wherever you are, we can connect.

Integrity

I give clients honest, transparent feedback about their cases — even when it is difficult. You deserve the truth, not false hope.

A deep sense of purpose guides this work. I believe every person deserves skilled legal representation regardless of their background.
